PCV Training – What Does It Mean?

Understanding PCV terminology and licence entitlements can be confusing. Here's a simple breakdown.

PCV

PCV stands for Passenger Carrying Vehicle. A PCV entitlement is a qualification gained by taking the appropriate further test to drive coaches and buses.

Minibus

A minibus is a vehicle designed or adapted to carry more than 8 but fewer than 17 passengers, excluding the driver.

Existing Drivers

Anyone who passed their car entitlement test before 1 January 1997 may have additional entitlements allowing them to drive certain small buses and lorries. For licences obtained after 1990 but before 1997, these may appear as: B, B+E, C1, C1+E, D1 and D1+E, subject to the relevant restrictions.

New Drivers

Drivers who passed their test after 1 January 1997 generally have fewer automatic entitlements, with Category B appearing on their licence.
